Hal Smullen is a large account producer for Wentworth DeAngelis Insurance. His is also the founder and president of Smullen & Associates, LLC, a management consulting and risk advisory company. Hal has over 40 years of experience in insurance and risk management and an extensive background in insurance brokerage, agency and insurance company operations, alternative risk strategies, risk management consulting and risk financing.
Hal served as Area President-Hartford, for Arthur J. Gallagher Risk Management Services, the fourth largest insurance broker in the U.S. As Area President, Hal was responsible for all aspects of branch sales, operations, compliance, talent management, growth strategies and financial performance.
Prior to joining Gallagher, Hal was Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at R.C. Knox & Company, Inc. a leading regional independent insurance agency. While at Knox, he was responsible for overall insurance agency operations including marketing, human resources, client service, compliance and finance. In addition, he led the Financial Institutions Group within the Commercial Insurance Division. As an insurance producer, Hal specializes in professional liability and specialty products for financial services companies and middle market commercial risks. Hal began his career with the Travelers Insurance Group where he held various underwriting and management positions within the middle market and national accounts departments.
Hal is a Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and a Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU). In addition, he holds the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designation. He received a BA degree in Economics from Trinity College, Hartford, and an MBA in Finance from the University of Connecticut. He is a licensed insurance consultant, and holds property casualty and life accident and health licenses.
Hal serves as director, trustee or corporator on numerous not for profit boards and advisory panels. He is currently President of the Board of Directors of American School for the Deaf.
